About

About Boutique

A travel publication about South Africa. Places worth crossing the world for.

Boutique is a travel publication about South Africa. Most travel writing about the country is either promotional or generic. Boutique exists to be neither.

We write about the places worth going and honestly about the places that don't earn their reputation. We recommend properties we believe in and are transparent about which recommendations come from personal experience and which come from industry reputation.

What we cover

Safari in the Greater Kruger and beyond. The Cape Winelands. Cape Town and the wider peninsula. Johannesburg, which deserves more attention than it gets. Itineraries that combine these into trips that actually work. Practical guides for travellers who want to plan properly. And the occasional Journal essay on how to think about travel in South Africa.

Who writes it

Boutique is edited by Justin Bale, who grew up in South Africa and has spent two decades travelling the country and the region. The site is independent, self-funded, and carries no paid placements or sponsored reviews. Where writing extends beyond first-hand experience, articles say so clearly.

How we make money

Some of the links on this site are affiliate links to our booking partners. When you book through one of them, the property or platform pays us a small commission, at no additional cost to you. The commission does not influence what we write, which properties we recommend, or how we rank them. Recommended stays carry a verdict, distinguishing properties we know from personal experience from those recommended on trusted industry reputation. You can read how that system works on our verdict system page.
